Instead of letting Claude call APIs without governance, an MCP server defines available tools, enforces authentication, applies rate limiting, and logs every invocation. If your Claude deployment needs to take action in enterprise systems, book appointments, update records, query live data, you need an MCP server. If Claude is only summarizing or generating text from static inputs, you may not.
